Just because there is air leaking "around the spokes" doesn't necessarily mean that there is no tube in there. Once air gets out of the tube, then it will leak out anywhere it can get out.
Try this: let all the air out of the tire/tube. There should be a nut on the valve stem. Take off the cap and the nut. You should be able to move the valve stem in and out, and it should feel like there is something attached to it. If so, you have a tube. You may just have a spoke poked through the tube.
